My apprenticeship journey

“I’ve been here 8 years now and had my whole career here.”

Connor started as an apprentice 8 years ago and, with the training provided, has gone on to fill two different roles – as an engineer and as a production engineer.

Why I switched into a Building Materials career

“I was looking for a dynamic, fast-paced and fun industry.”

I saw my current role advertised and it looked interesting so, even though I had no experience of the Building Materials industry, I got in touch and got the job.”

Jordan worked as a car salesman, plus other various roles in the automotive industry. He found that the Building Materials industry enabled him to work at something he really enjoyed, develop his skills and mix with really good people.

Advancing careers in the sector

The Institute of Builders Merchants

The Institute of Builders Merchants [IOBM] is the professional body for the Building Materials industry.

The Institute’s prime focus is to help its members build excellent careers in merchanting, by creating a framework of accredited qualifications, recognised by employers in the sector, that will help develop their skills and advance their careers. The accredited qualification framework will have clear entry criteria and pathways to progressive membership grades.

It’s just one of the many ways employers are supporting the advancement, training and upskilling of the people in our sector, to help build a better future for everyone.
