The Haldane Group is one of the leading independent suppliers to the building materials industry in the UK and Ireland. It is made up of Haldane Fisher NI, Haldane Fisher Isle of Man, Haldane Fisher UK, GE Robinson, Prowood, Key Hardware, Plumbmaster and Bathline.
Still, a family owned business the Company have come a long way since its origins in the centre of Newry in 1946 by Bob Haldane. From these modest beginnings we expanded across the UK employing over 700 people. The key factor in our growth has been the skill and commitment of our employees, many of whom have been with the company for 20, 30 and even 40+ years. The business has grow organically and through the acquisition but it still retains the high levels of personal service one would associate with a family run business.
Supplying a huge range of products – everything from building materials to plumbing and heating, home improvement products to internal finish such as architectural ironmongery, bathrooms, doors and floors. The Group imports timber and timber products, and is a leading manufacturer of machined timber as well as engineered roofing and flooring solutions in Ireland.
We pride ourselves on the opportunities people have to progress through the Company. Many of the current Directors and Senior Management Team have made this progression through the company. They offer a wealth of skills and experience as they lead and manage the business. Providing the highest levels of customer service, product knowledge and sound advice is our ultimate goal.
Through the commitment and dedication of all our employees we have become one of the UK’s largest independent Companies within our sector. With teamwork and continuing individual development we aim to create an environment where everyone will feel valued and experience job satisfaction.
Career development and growth
We offer our people the opportunity to undertake both internal and external training across a range of disciplines. As a member of the BMF (Builders Merchants Federation) training opportunities are available across our Branches at the start of your career. Further development through bespoke training and specific BMF courses are on offer as part of a comprehensive training and development programme.
We offer you the opportunity to grow yourself and develop a career in merchanting whilst achieving your own personal goals. In 2023 we launched our HiPo Development programme taking a range of people across the Group into a fast track development programme.
Below is an example of a career progression path that many of our Branch Managers in Haldane Fisher have developed from.
Sustainability / environmental stewardship
We are committed to a cleaner, healthier environment and we believe that sustainability should embedded in every fabric of our business – from the energy we generate and burn, the products we supply, and the service we provide for our customers.
We started this journey a few years ago and are already well on our way to achieve our targeted 2030 carbon reduction figure. Our ultimate goal is to attain carbon neutrality as quickly as possible.
We started with the simple things – replacing diesel cars with hybrid versions. This quickly saw all diesel cars banned and petrol hybrids only being made available to those on higher annual mileage. We further reduced the miles per vehicle travelled by encouraging remote, rather than face-to-face, meetings.
Forklift trucks are now replaced with fully electric versions, and side loaders soon to go the same way.
To power our EV cars and forklifts, we have begun a programme of solar panel installation across the Group. We are currently producing more than 500,000 kwh of electricity on site annually, with the remaining energy all coming from renewable sources.
Many of our buildings have received makeovers, looking at better insulation and energy efficiency, and yard and warehouse areas are continuously reviewed to reduce travel distances and improve efficiencies. Waste streams have been analysed and changes have been implemented to reduce, reuse and recycle, thus reducing our waste to landfill to less than 5%. Operating procedures within all aspects of the business continue to be reviewed and digitised to streamline them.
Our buying teams work only with suppliers committed to sustainability, and these are reviewed regularly to ensure the products that we pass on to our customer base meet with the standards we have set.
We are committed to striking a harmonious balance between our economic ambitions, our responsibilities to our environment, and our social obligations.
