About Richmonds of London Limited
The company was established in Battersea in 1870 and has remained an independent merchant ever since. The company moved to Wimbledon in 1997. Although in Merton Borough the nearest station is Earlsfield. The company services commercial customers in London and the South East with a wide range of products from many suppliers with focus on light side building materials e.g. sanitaryware, brassware, tubes, valves, fittings etc. As well as being a specialist supplier of maintenance products the company also handles large refurbishment projects nationally specialising in the hospitality sector. Customer retention through outstanding customer service is a key part of the business plan and the company is proud that some customers have been with the company for decades.
Company culture
Just as customer retention is important so to is staff retention. For some years now staff turnover has been well below the industry average. The company believes that excellent customer service springs from like-minded staff working together as a team. This generates pride in achievement and job satisfaction that helps to motivate everyone in the company. We also ensure all staff are aware of company matters via a monthly news letter. We also believe individuals work better when given clear guidelines and procedures and than allowed to work without being over-managed. Great teamwork is a key ingredient in looking after customers and we believe if we look after customers they will look after us,
Employee benefits and perks
We have benefits ranging from a pension scheme aided by an independent financial adviser to a quarterly bonus scheme that incorporates all the staff. We have a package of benefits that we feel contributes to our high level of staff retention and that are commensurate with similar sized businesses in the industry.
Career development and growth
We support staff with training and development plans that are tailored to suit the individual. This ranges from in house on the job training for specific jobs and roles to engaging with outside agencies like the BMF for more formal training. Two members of staff recently completed the Diploma in Merchanting. We firmly believe in training and development but feel this works better when addressing the needs of the individual as well as the business. For internal promotions we always look at our team first to fill any opportunities rather than going externally.
EDI (equity, diversity & inclusion) initiatives
We have policies in place that support our commitment to EDI but feel our record as a business over many years demonstrates the old adage that actions speak louder than words. Many of our customers regularly audit our commitment to these policies.
Sustainability / environmental stewardship
As a business we are keen to work with our customers on supplying environmentally friendly products. This ranges from specifying water-saving products for large refurbishments as well as smaller scale initiatives for washrooms in commercial buildings. We also monitor our Scope 1 and 2 emissions with targets for the business. Last year we undertook and exercise to measure our Scope 3 emissions and as a business have targets to reduce our carbon emissions in line with government targets.
