Grant & Stone Building Supplies | Part of the Independent Builders Merchant Group (IBMG)

We have an exciting internal opportunity for a Counter Sales & Yard Operative to join our High Wycombe branch.

This varied role combines customer-facing counter sales responsibilities with hands-on yard duties, making it ideal for someone who enjoys working with customers, supporting colleagues, and contributing to the smooth day-to-day running of a busy branch.

About the Role

Counter Sales Responsibilities


  • Building positive relationships with customers face-to-face, over the phone, and via email

  • Dealing with customer sales enquiries and processing orders accurately and efficiently

  • Providing advice on products, pricing, and availability

  • Identifying opportunities to offer alternative products and additional solutions to meet customer needs

  • Delivering excellent customer service to encourage repeat business

  • Supporting the branch team in achieving and exceeding sales targets

  • Assisting with shop merchandising, stock replenishment, and general branch duties where required

Yard Responsibilities

  • Assisting customers in the yard safely and professionally

  • Picking, preparing, and checking customer orders

  • Loading and unloading vehicles safely and efficiently

  • Maintaining a clean, organised, and safe yard environment

  • Supporting stock management and inventory accuracy

  • Operating a Forklift Truck (training can be provided where required)

About You

We're looking for a positive, customer-focused team member who is keen to learn and contribute to the success of the branch.

You'll ideally have:

  • Experience within a customer service, sales, warehouse, distribution, builders' merchant, retail, or construction-related environment
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Confidence dealing with customers face-to-face and over the telephone
  • A positive, team-oriented approach
  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail
  • The ability to work both indoors and outdoors
  • A willingness to learn new skills and develop product knowledge

Desirable, but not essential:

  • Builders' merchant or construction product knowledge
  • Forklift Truck (FLT) licence

Previous builders' merchant experience would be advantageous, but full training and support will be provided for the right candidate.

Working Hours

Week 1

  • Monday to Friday: 7:30am to 5:15pm

Week 2

  • Monday to Friday: 7:30am to 5:15pm
  • Saturday: 8:00am to 12:00pm
