Job description

The Sales Advisor will be a key member of the sales team, bringing proven trade counter and construction product experience to deliver outstanding service to contractors, builders, and retail customers.

This role is responsible for providing expert product knowledge, technical guidance, and commercial advice on sheeting and roofing solutions, whilst ensuring an efficient, professional, and customer-focused purchasing experience.

The post holder will play an active role in driving sales growth, maximising order value, and building long-term customer relationships through their understanding of trade requirements and industry standards.

Key accountabilities

  • Use in-depth trade and product knowledge to advise customers on appropriate sheeting and roofing solutions, taking into account specifications, application, budget, and industry best practice.
  • Deliver a consistently high level of service to contractors, builders, and retail customers at the trade counter and over the telephone.
  • Act as a trusted point of contact for technical product enquiries, resolving issues confidently and professionally.
  • Process sales orders accurately and efficiently using company systems, ensuring pricing, stock availability, and delivery requirements are clearly communicated.
  • Handle cash transactions, card payments, invoicing, and credit processes in line with company procedures, ensuring all documentation is completed correctly.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to upsell and cross-sell complementary products, increasing overall order value.
  • Build, develop, and maintain strong working relationships with regular trade customers to encourage repeat business and account loyalty.
  • Support less experienced team members by sharing product knowledge and good trade counter practices where appropriate.
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and professional trade counter environment that reflects company standards.

Requirements

Knowledge and Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in trade counter sales, construction product sales, or a similar trade-focused sales environment.
  • Strong knowledge of construction materials, ideally sheeting, roofing, or related product lines.
  • Proven experience dealing with trade customers and understanding their time-critical and technical requirements.
  • Experience of working with sales order processing systems and handling high transaction volumes.
  • Previous experience of working in a sales, customer service or trade counter sales.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of the construction industry and product lines would be an advantage

Skills and abilities

 

  • Confident and credible communicator, able to engage with experienced trade professionals face to face and over the telephone.
  • Strong technical understanding with the ability to explain products and solutions clearly.
  • Solid IT skills, including Office 365, and confidence in learning new systems.
  • Good numerical, written, and verbal skills, with attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional when handling customer issues or challenging situations.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills in a fast-paced trade environment.
