Careers at Crendon Timber Engineering: Jack West-Jordan

Jack West-Jordan’s journey is a shining example of where a career with Crendon Timber Engineering can take you. From work experience student to Branch Manager of our largest site, Jack’s 15-year journey reflects his unwavering commitment to the industry and Crendon’s investment in its employees, giving them the opportunities and tools to grow professionally.

Jack’s story began in 2006 with a two-week placement at East Harling. Returning after full-time education in 2010, Jack applied for a factory role, arriving at his interview fully suited and booted. That early display of professionalism caught the attention of our team, and he was instead offered a trainee sales and estimator position.

From the outset, Jack excelled. He was taught to use MiTek software, which he quickly mastered; he confidently took on complex projects; and showed initiative by visiting merchant clients and carrying out site measures. His energy and focus made him a key part of the team as the business evolved.

“Jack’s development has been outstanding,” says Crendon Managing Director, Tim Wilson. “He’s gone from trainee to Branch Manager in one company through hard work, professionalism, and the respect he earns from his team and clients. He sets the benchmark for what’s possible when you combine opportunity with determination.”

In 2016, amid a £1 million investment in East Harling’s site and equipment, Jack was promoted to Senior Housing Estimator. He helped us exceed ambitious turnover targets and was selected for Crendon’s FAST TRACK management programme. From there, he steadily rose through the ranks – becoming Housing Manager in 2018, Commercial Manager in 2021, and then to Branch Manager in 2025.

Speaking about his journey, Jack says: “I’m grateful for the many years of service working with an outstanding team, whose collective knowledge and support have been crucial to my personal development and career progression.”

At the 2025 TRA Roofscape Design Awards, Jack was named Career Development Champion of the Year, a fantastic accolade that highlights his commitment to his own professional development within the timber engineering industry. Jack’s journey and achievement reflect the core values of Crendon Timber Engineering, investing in people, building futures, and shaping the next generation of timber engineering professionals.

Why Building Materials is becoming one of the UK’s most exciting places to find a job

The UK building materials sector is undergoing one of the biggest transformations in its history and that’s creating a wave of new opportunities for young people and career‑switchers looking for meaningful, future‑proof work. Far from the traditional image of a slow‑moving industry, today’s building materials sector is being reshaped by innovation, sustainability, digitalisation, and a growing demand for fresh talent.

One of the biggest drivers of change is the push for greener, more sustainable construction. Companies across the sector are investing in low‑carbon materials, recycling technologies, and energy‑efficient manufacturing processes, opening up new roles in R&D, digital engineering, and green technology. Sustainability pressures are transforming the industry and creating demand for workers with new skill sets.

At the same time, digital transformation is accelerating, with businesses adopting advanced data systems, automation, and AI‑powered tools to improve efficiency and accuracy. This shift is creating opportunities for people with digital, analytical, and tech‑driven mindsets – skills that are increasingly valued over traditional experience. The sector is actively seeking new entrants to help drive this modernisation.

The industry is also expanding its workforce to meet future demand. Globally, the building materials sector employs more than 9.2 million people, adding over 376,000 new employees in the past year alone – a sign of its resilience and long‑term growth potential. In the UK alone it’s a £52Bn sector – so a vast and varied place to find a job.

Yet despite its scale and importance, many people still don’t realise how diverse and rewarding careers in building materials can be. Research shows that while the term is familiar, most UK adults don’t understand what the sector includes or the breadth of opportunities it offers. That’s why we have created bmcareers.com – explore the website to discover what makes our world so special.
